  • Abstract:

As it becomes easier to publish scientific data on the emerging life science semantic web, we must take steps to facilitate the discovery of such data and the conditions under which it is available. To complicate matters, multiple providers now offer slight variants of common datasets, in terms of coverage, representation, version, format and license. While several vocabularies cover some aspects thereof, guidelines are necessary to ensure proper conformance to facilitate discovery of datasets and their use in scientific analyses. We present a set of conventions to describe the nature and availability of datasets on the emerging life science Semantic Web. In addition to basic descriptions, we focus our effort on elements of origin, licensing, (re-)distribution, data formats and availability, language, vocabulary and content summaries. Adherence to these simple conventions will not only facilitate discovery of independently generated and published data, but also create the basis for the emergence of a data marketplace, a competitive environment to offer increasingly reliable access to ever higher quality data.
